Talk to someone

Being a young carer can sometimes feel hard or confusing. Talking to someone kind can really help. Here you can find out how to get support from a friendly worker who listens to you and helps you in a way that feels safe and comfortable. You are not on your own.

If you’re a young carer, we can offer personalised one-to-one support from a dedicated Young Carer Support Worker to help you manage the impact of your caring role.

This is usually done in school in person, but we can meet somewhere more informal if you prefer, such as your favourite café or go for a walk-and-talk in the park. We could even play a game of chess! We can meet you wherever you feel most comfortable discussing your caring role.

You might feel as if you don’t want to worry your family by talking to them about how you really feel, but it sometimes talking to them can help you all to feel better. Talking openly about an illness, disability or condition can help you to know the truth instead of worrying about things that might not happen.

Talking to friends can feel scary, especially if you’re not used to sharing personal things. Remember, you’re in control of what you say and when you say it. Try sharing one small thing first. If they respond in a caring way, that can help you feel safer about opening up more.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) can help you understand how your thoughts, feelings, and actions are connected, and give you gentle ways to cope with stress, anxiety, or other challenges. You’ll get support from someone who listens and helps in a way that feels safe and comfortable.

Alongside supporting young carers directly, we also work with families, offering practical help, advice, and guidance. Families can take part in groups, workshops, and trips to connect with others, build confidence, and feel less alone.

In mainstream secondary schools we hold monthly drop ins where someone from the young carers team will be available to talk to. We bring snacks and games, and it is a chance to meet other young carers as well as an opportunity to reach out for more support.

Young carers are also issued with a school card which they can use to show staff they are a young carer.

Schools all have pastoral staff you can talk to if you are a young carer. If you do not know who your school young carer champion is, you can speak to any member of staff you feel comfortable with. Schools can also refer you to the young carers service (with parental consent) so you can access our youth clubs, activities and support. If schools know about your caring role, they can make adjustments to help you balance school and home and provide support and help.
