Remember your feelings are valid

Feeling stressed, angry, sad or exhausted doesn’t mean you are doing anything wrong.
Caring can be hard, especially if you are young. It is ok to ask for help for yourself.

Switch off and make time for yourself

Even five to ten minutes can help you reset. Kick a football round the garden,
do some easy stretching, or dance to your favourite song. It doesn’t matter what it is.

Connect with others

Talk to someone you trust. This could be a friend, teacher, school counsellor,
cousin, Auntie or another young carer. It can even be a pet.

Keep a journal

Writing down your thoughts and feelings can help, especially at bedtime.
It can be as helpful as telling someone and may help you sleep better.

Do some art

Art can be relaxing and a way to be mindful and have fun.
Focus on enjoying the process rather than being perfect.
Even colouring in can be good for you.

Have some screen free time each day

Switching off from screens can help your sleep.
Blue light can affect how well you rest, so time away from screens is important.

Practise a mindful exercise

  • 4, 7, 8 breathing: Breathe in for 4 seconds, hold for 7 seconds, and exhale for 8 seconds. Repeat 5–10 times.
  • Grounding: Name 5 things you see, 4 things you hear, 3 things you can touch, 2 things you can smell and 1 thing you imagine you have tasted.
  • Body scan: Slowly think about how each part of your body feels, from head to toe.

Remember you are more than a carer

Make space for dreams and hobbies, friendships and fun.
