Talk to someone

If you’re a young adult carer living in York, you can get free, confidential support from York Carers Centre. We understand that caring can look very different for everyone, and it’s not always easy to know what support you might need.

You don’t have to have all the answers and you don’t need to be in crisis to get in touch. Whether you have a quick question, need someone to talk things through with, or want help exploring your options, we’re here for you. Together, we can look at what support might help and find an approach that feels right for you.

There are several ways you can access support:

If you’re a young adult carer, you can request personalised one-to-one support from a dedicated Young Adult Carer Support Worker to help you manage the impact of your caring role. There are several ways you can access support:

In-person

We can arrange to meet in-person at a time and place that suits you best. Whether you prefer the comfort of your own home or a calm and welcoming safe space at York Carers Centre, we’re happy to accommodate.

If you’d rather meet somewhere more informal, we can join you at your favourite café, go for a walk-and-talk in the park, or bus ride together. We could even play a game of chess! We can meet you wherever you feel most comfortable discussing your caring role.

On the phone

We can arrange a phone call at a time that works best for you. We understand that conversations may sometimes be interrupted or need breaks, and that’s absolutely fine. We’re here to work around your needs and make it as easy as possible for you.

Online

We offer a variety of ways to support you online, so you can choose what feels most comfortable. Whether you’d prefer to chat on WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Instagram, or any other platform, we can arrange a specific time to talk, or simply message back and forth whenever it suits you. You can also email us your questions or concerns and wait for a response. If you’d like to have a video call, we can connect on MS Teams, Zoom, WhatsApp Video, or Facebook Video, with cameras on or off depending on your preference.

The best thing is you don’t have to stick to just one way of staying in touch. We understand that life can be unpredictable, so you’re free to mix and match the different options to keep the support flowing whenever you need it. For example, you might start by sending us an email, then meet up in person, followed by a few phone calls and a WhatsApp conversation, and later return to another in-person chat. Whatever works for you, we’ll do our best to make it happen!

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) can help you understand how your thoughts, feelings, and actions are connected, and give you gentle ways to cope with stress, anxiety, or other challenges. You’ll get support from someone who listens and helps in a way that feels safe and comfortable.

Alongside supporting young carers directly, we also work with families, offering practical help, advice, and guidance. Families can take part in groups, workshops, and trips to connect with others, build confidence, and feel less alone.

Counselling can be beneficial to help with coping strategies and offering a space to talk openly and in-depth, without fear of judgment.

To access our counselling service you must register with us. Please mention that you are interested in carer’s counselling when you register.

If you are already registered with us and would like counselling around your caring role, please call 01904 715 490 or email enquiries@yorkcarerscentre.co.uk

There are several organisations who provide counselling, either generally, or specifically around your caring role.

As an unpaid carer you can ask for an assessment of your own needs to see if you’re eligible to receive support.

A Carers Assessment of Need is NOT an assessment of your abilities as a carer; rather, it focuses on YOUR personal needs and looks at ways to make your caring role more manageable. It’s designed to ensure you receive the right support and resources and can often be an important first step.

If you would like to have a Carers Assessment of Need please request one using the button below.
