Looking after your own wellbeing matters
Caring can take a lot of energy, especially when you are a young adult. This page shares simple, gentle ideas to help you feel more balanced, supported and looked after – even when time or headspace feels limited.
-
Get some fresh air
Try to get at least 10 minutes outside each day, without screens. -
Hydrate
Keep drinking water throughout the day to help keep your brain fresh. -
Join a local activity
See what is available at Raise York. -
Remember your feelings are valid
Feeling stressed, angry, sad or exhausted does not mean you are doing anything wrong. Caring can be hard, especially when you are young. It is okay to ask for help for yourself. -
Switch off and make time for yourself
Even five to ten minutes can help you reset. Have a brew, do some gentle stretching, sing along to your favourite song – it all counts. -
Connect with others
Talk to someone you trust. This could be a friend, family member, another young adult carer or a support worker. It can even be a pet. -
Keep a journal
Writing down your thoughts and feelings can really help, especially at bedtime when worries can affect sleep. Writing can be as helpful as talking. -
Do some art
Creative activities can be relaxing and fun. Focus on enjoying the process rather than being perfect. Even colouring in can help – many adults find it calming too. -
Have some screen-free time each day
Taking breaks from screens is important for sleep and wellbeing. Blue light can affect your rest, so switching off regularly can really help. -
Practise a mindful exercise
4-7-8 breathing: breathe in for 4 seconds, hold for 7, breathe out for 8. Repeat 5–10 times.
Grounding: name 5 things you see, 4 you hear, 3 you touch, 2 you smell, and 1 you imagine you can taste.
Body scan: slowly notice how each part of your body feels, from head to toe. -
Remember you are more than a carer
Make space for dreams, hobbies, friendships and fun.
