Hilary's Story
Hilary’s journey to receiving support from York Carers Centre began when she visited a Carer Hub and spoke with a Carer Support Worker. They referred her for a Carers Assessment of Need, which marked the first step in getting the help she needed. Her caring role was a new and overwhelming experience, but over the years, Hilary has gained confidence and understanding in navigating the journey.
Hilary attended a five-week course on caring, which provided her with practical tips and coping strategies to better manage her caring role. She also took part in the ‘Breathe, Body and Mind’ workshops as well as mindfulness sessions, which she found especially calming and restorative.
In addition, Hilary attended the Creative Workshops: Exploring Loss and Grief. These workshops offered her a safe and supportive space to process and reflect on the emotional challenges that come with being a carer. She also received financial guidance from our Advice Worker, which helped her feel more informed and supported in her role.
Hilary has also received one-to-one support which gave her a fresh perspective, helping her to recognise where she was in her caring journey and reminding her of her own needs, alongside those of her husband. This balance has been vital in helping Hilary feel seen and supported in her caring role.
