An overview of York Carers Centre
We offer a comprehensive range of support and services tailored for unpaid carers, including:
Identifying carers
Our goal is to make it as easy as possible for carers to access the support they need. We understand that the term “carer” can sometimes be a barrier, so we actively work to raise awareness by setting up information stalls and stands in locations where carers are likely to see us.
Additionally, we deliver training for professionals to help them better identify and support carers, and we participate in numerous meetings to ensure that carers are considered in the development of key strategies.
News
We create a quarterly newsletter, and monthly e-bulletins filled with valuable information for carers. Additionally, we collaborate with various media outlets and partners to increase awareness and further support our cause.
Advice
Our team includes an Advice Worker and a Benefits Advisor, both of whom are available to assist carers in understanding their rights, completing forms, applying for benefits, and navigating the complexities of health and social care systems. They provide support on a wide range of topics, ensuring that carers receive all the entitlements and assistance they are eligible for.
Emotional support
We offer comprehensive emotional support to carers, helping them navigate the complex feelings that come with being a carer. Our services range from telephone listening and one-on-one support to professional counselling, ensuring carers receive the emotional guidance they need.
Carers Assessment of Need
We work closely with the City of York Council to undertake some Carers Assessment of Need – this is a good starting point for any carer.
Substance Misuse and Addiction Services
We run regular support groups for people who care for someone with an addiction, offering guidance, practical support, and the opportunity to connect with others who understand the challenges you face.
Mental health services
We provide one-to-one support and employ carers as peer supporters, bringing valuable lived experience in addressing the unique challenges faced by those caring for people with mental health conditions.
We run two regular groups for mental health carers: one focused on wellbeing and the other dedicated to influencing services. We are also involved in the transformation of mental health services, offering numerous opportunities for carers to shape and drive meaningful change.
Chance to meet with other carers
We offer a variety of groups, hubs, and activities, ranging from regular meetings and drop-ins to one-time trips and events. Some of these are focused on supporting carer wellbeing, while others provide opportunities for carers to share what matters most to them. Connecting with others who understand your experiences is incredibly valuable for carers.
Working in the hospitals
We have staff based in both York Hospital and Foss Park Hospital, helping to support carers when the person they look after is in or being discharged from hospital.
Young Adult Carers
We provide a dedicated service for carers aged 18 to 25, offering a variety of social and educational activities, one-on-one support, peer support, and a range of projects specifically tailored to their age group.
Young Carers
We support Young Carers from the age of 5 and onwards, offering a wide range of activities including youth clubs, day trips, events, school drop-ins, and individual support.
Voice of carers
All of our services empower carers to have a voice on the issues that matter most to them. We also facilitate a Carers Action Group, where carers can come together with professionals to share their views and influence change.
Carers Emergency Card
Carers can sign up to our Carers Emergency Card scheme if they care for an adult. This enables them to put a plan in place in case something happens suddenly which affects their ability to care.
Carers Discount Card
All carers who register with us receive a Carers Discount Card, offering access to a range of discounts at local businesses. These include everything from pampering sessions to practical services like legal advice.
