Staff profiles - Senior Management

The Senior Management team is a dedicated but small team of four who work closely to lead and support the organisation. The CEO drives the organisation’s vision, ensures the organisation runs smoothly, raises the profile and advocates for unpaid carers in York, and makes sure that staff have everything they need to do their jobs.
Supporting this effort is the Deputy CEO, ensuring HR requirements are met and fostering a supportive and positive workplace culture, the Finance Manager, expertly managing a tight budget, and the Systems and Office Manager, maintaining data security and ensuring Health and Safety requirements are met.

Sharron Smith

Chief Executive Officer

As the Chief Executive Officer of the charity, I liaise with the Board of Trustees and oversee the leadership and management of the organisation.

My responsibilities include representing unpaid carers across the city in various meetings, securing sufficient funding to sustain and grow our services, and ensuring we consistently provide high-quality support for carers.

My career began in youth work, followed by training as a general nurse. After travelling, I joined York Carers Centre in 2000 on a three-month temporary contract. Since then, I’ve managed the Young Carer (aged 5 – 18) service, helped establish the Young Adult Carer (aged 18 – 25) service, and led the Adult Carer (aged 25+) service before assuming my current role as Chief Executive Officer, a position I am really passionate about.

The best part of my job is leading an organisation with such a dedicated team that always put carers at the heart of everything they do.

Alison Wheatley

Deputy Chief Executive

I have been with York Carers Centre since 2017, and I have worked in the voluntary sector for over 30 years.

As the Deputy CEO I am responsible for the Human Resources function and support Sharron with the delivery of our carer services.

I enjoy being part of the Carers Centre team and feel passionate about making sure that staff and carers have the best experience during their time with York Carers Centre.
I joined the Centre as a Carer Support Worker in the Adult Team; following this I was the Lead Officer for the Adult Team, and in 2025 I moved into the Deputy CEO role.  During this time, I also trained qualified as a counsellor and have volunteered in the counselling service since 2022.
In my role, I am responsible for recruiting, inducting new staff, supporting staff with employment rights, creating and overseeing policies and procedures, and working alongside managers with performance and compliance.
York Carers Centre is dedicated to creating a safe and healthy workplace where staff are treated respectfully and fairly, there is recognition for their commitment and hard work, development and growth is encouraged, and we recognise that many of the staff are carers as well.

Finance Manager

I originally joined York Carers Centre in October 2024 as a volunteer within the communications department after meeting the team at a career's fayre held in York. What really impressed me was the care, dedication and complete commitment that all who work at York Carers Centre have, to the work they do and the carers they support.

As a qualified accountant, my background is in Finance.  I had been working in industry in the Midlands for many, (many!) years – starting on my career path as a purchase ledger assistant and progressing to finance director – but after a move to York I wanted to work within the non-profit making sector.  Whilst finance – and not communications – was my background, the team at York Carers Centre were very encouraging and supportive and so I was excited to join as a volunteer.
Before becoming involved with York Carers Centre, I had not fully appreciated just how challenging and difficult life can be for unpaid carers.  Through my volunteer experience I learned how important the help and support provided by the charity is and how it makes a genuine difference to carers’ lives.
In March 2025 an opportunity arose to join York Carers Centre in the position of Finance Manager – managing the charity’s finances, budgets, reporting and contributing to the charity’s strategy.  I was delighted to be asked to join and am really pleased to be able to contribute to the very valuable work that the team at York Carers Centre does.

Systems and Office Manager

I joined York Carers Centre in early 2018 and it has been a rewarding experience ever since. The passion and dedication of everyone here towards supporting carers and meeting their needs inspires me every day.

In my role, I oversee our IT systems and ensure that our office remains a safe, welcoming environment for all. The wellbeing of our staff, volunteers, and visitors is essential to delivering the best possible service to carers.

Raising awareness of carers holds a personal significance for me; having been a carer from a young age – without even realising it at the time – I now feel proud to contribute to raising awareness and improving the lives of carers.

Witnessing the positive impact we make to the lives of unpaid carers in York is both inspiring and fulfilling and I am committed to continuing this important work.
