About Us

York Carers Centre is an independent charity and a proud network partner of the Carers Trust. We work with other organisations to ensure that unpaid carers in York receive the confidential information, guidance, and support they need.

We offer free support to unpaid carers of all ages, through these main services:

  • Young carers (aged 5 to 18)
  • Young adult carers (aged 18 to 25)
  • Adult carers (aged 25+)
  • Parent carers

Our funding comes from a variety of sources, but our main funders are the City of York Council and the Humber and North Yorkshire Health and Care Partnership.

We depend on grants from charitable trusts, as well as donations and fundraisers, to fund and deliver specific projects.

Many of our staff team are carers themselves, and we are all committed to working alongside carers to drive positive change in service delivery across all organisations.

Our funders

Our main funders are the City of York Council, and the NHS Humber and North Yorkshire Integrated Care Partnership. These fund our core services and enable us to bring in additional funds to enhance services for carers.

Additional funds include:

The National Lottery funding runs until June 2027 and helps us to support young carers and young adult carers with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and family work.  Commonly presented issues are PTSD, low mood, anger and anxieties. The funding enables “Positive And Adverse Childhood Experiences” (PAACE) workshops to take place. Outcomes have included reduced PTSD symptoms (such as flashbacks, interrupted sleep and panic attacks), improved focus at school and increased confidence to go out independently.

The funding also provide money for essential items for those most in need and enables us to provide activities for parents of young carers to meet and reduce isolation. In addition, the funding enables us to employ a community fundraiser to help make the project more sustainable.

Current funding runs until March 2027. Working in partnership with York Mind, City of York Council, and Tees, Esk & Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust (TEWV), we support carers via mental health hubs and those caring for someone admitted to Foss Park Hospital.  Please see our caring for someone with a mental health condition pages for more information.

We also receive one off, short-term funding from the Carers Trust, local charitable trusts, other charities, and through the kindness and generosity of individuals who support us through fundraising or donations. With this extra funding we have been able to:

  • Run employability sessions with young adult carers (aged 18-25)
  • Provide families with support towards the cost of school uniforms
We would like to say a special thank you to our amazing volunteers and supporters who provide in-kind support to our work and without whom we could not achieve what we do.

Carers’ voices are essential, and through funding we can seize every opportunity to represent, advocate, and successfully push for better outcomes for carers.

By building stronger community connections, through strengthening existing partnerships and creating new ones, we aim to increase understanding of caring, promote carer-friendly practices and embed support for carers across all sectors.
