Mindfulness for Caring and Coping

We’re once again offering Mindfulness for Caring and Coping, a five week course on Thursdays in September.

The sessions will cover the ‘what?’ and ‘how?’ of mindfulness, and the aim is that you will leave the course with some useful skills and ways to approach your caring role. The focus will be on looking after our bodies and minds, and having some fun along the way. There will be suggestions for practices you can do between the sessions too, with audio materials provided.

The course is suitable for complete beginners and those with some mindfulness experience.

When: Thursdays from 17 September to 15 October from 2 to 3.30pm

As the sessions take place on Zoom you’ll need a suitable device (such as a laptop or tablet), and internet access.

Writing for Relaxation

‘Writing for Relaxation’ is a four week creative writing course provided by The Writing Tree.

Local writer and Creative Writing teacher Helen Kenwright will lead five Zoom-based sessions where we will try out writing exercises to help us relax and de-stress.

No previous creative writing skill or experience is required, and participants will not be expected to share any writing in the session unless they wish to.

The course is about taking some time to write for fun and relaxation.

When: Monday 28 September to Monday 19th October, from 2 to 3.30pm.

As the sessions are on Zoom you’ll need a suitable device (such as a laptop or tablet) to take part.

* Carers Hub

Our new online Carers Hubs are friendly gatherings, where you can bring a brew and drop for an informal chat with our Carer Support Workers and other carers, from the comfort of your own home. You’ll also be able get information and advice from the team.

Each week will focus on a different loose theme such as food, nature or films and books, and there will plenty of opportunities to chat more generally about other things too.

This week’s session will be a general chat with a food theme.

There are four hubs a month, at differing times in the week; you’re welcome to as many as you wish.

Please let us know if you’d like to come and we’ll send you the zoom link to join.

Substance Misuse Carers Group (on zoom)

During the current period of social distancing we will be running some of our support groups virtually, via zoom.

This session is for people affected by someone else’s substance misuse and is a chance to talk to other carers and our staff.

New members are welcome to take part, and if you haven’t attended our substance misuse carer groups before our facilitator Sam Ferguson will ring you prior to the session to asses your needs.

What will you need to take part:

You’ll need access to a device with a camera (phone/laptop/tablet), internet access, an email address and access to the Zoom app

How to book:

  • Contact our reception on enquiries@yorkcarerscentre.co.uk or 01904 715 490 to book a space
  • We will email you a meeting agreement to read and return
  • You will be sent a Zoom meeting ID and password for each individual meeting to enable you to log in

Carer Awareness Training (via zoom)

We are currently offering our face to face training sessions via zoom,  where professionals can come and learn more about carers and the support available for unpaid carers across the city. This will increase your understanding of carers, their role and its effect on their lives.

It is an opportunity to explore how we as professionals or employers can help to identify carers early; recognise carers as partners in care;  and help carers to maintain their own health and wellbeing.

The session will include a presentation, share information around current carer issues (such as Covid-19/isolation), engage in discussions, a quiz and share links to carer films on YouTube.  One of our volunteer Carer Champions will share experiences of being a carer.

Courses will run regularly throughout the year.

Substance misuse and gambling carers group (on Zoom)

A new monthly support group for people who are supporting loved ones through issues with substance misuse and/or gambling.

We know that some carers may find it difficult to attend groups during the day, so this new support group is available in the evenings, on Zoom.

What will you need to take part:

You’ll need access to a device with a camera (phone/laptop/tablet), internet access, an email address and access to the Zoom app

How to book:

  • Contact our reception on enquiries@yorkcarerscentre.co.uk or 01904 715 490 to book a space
  • Our facilitator will offer you a 30 minute telephone appointment prior to the group
  • Everyone joining the group will have read and returned a confidentiality agreement to take part in the Zoom call, and be provided with a confidential link to the meeting
