Universal Credit (UC)
UC can be claimed if you are working age and on a low income. It is paid monthly.
You must usually be aged 18 and under state pension age. Your capital must be below £16,000. The resources of couples are added together.
If you have capital between £6,000 and £16,000, the amount of yield income will reduce your monthly UC entitlement at a rate of £4.35 for each £250 or part £250 above the lower threshold of £6,000.
You must also sign a claimant’s commitment. This sets out what work-related requirements, if any, you must fulfill. No work-related requirements should be imposed on carers who care for a disabled person for at least 35 hours a week.
The standard amount of UC can be increased where you have rental housing costs, a child receiving DLA, or you or your partner have limited capability for work-related activity, or you are a carer.
You can receive the carer element of UC if you meet the qualifying conditions for Carers Allowance. You do not need to have claimed Carers Allowance.
Note: receiving the carer element in your UC may affect the amount of benefit received by the person you care for. Seek advice in this situation.
