Arranging and paying for care

Arranging care for someone close to you can feel overwhelming. It may be difficult to access information to help you make the right decisions and to understand what financial support they may be eligible for from the local council or in some instances the NHS, to help meet the cost of care.

The first place to start, whether the person you care for needs home adaptations, home care or a care home place, is to arrange a Care Needs Assessment from their local council.

We have compiled some short films and factsheets to help you if you are starting to look at options for care and support, including who to talk to about meeting the cost of care.

  • Paying for care advice – if you are thinking about how to plan and pay for care you can access information from City of York Council
  • Paying for care; self funders filmed at our Carers Rights Day event – Sharon Calline from City of York Council explains capital thresholds and Deferred Payment Agreements
  • Live Well York – If you are looking for a Care Home or Home Care Service a good place to start may be the Live Well York service and products search tool

It is important that you feel confident about the quality of the care you are arranging. The Care Quality Commission is the independent regulator of health and social care in England. They register, monitor, inspect, report and rate health and care services in England. Reports on their findings for all care and health services can be found on their website.
