Carers guide to working and caring
Juggling paid work and unpaid care can feel like doing two full-time jobs at once.
Many carers balance meetings, deadlines and professional responsibilities alongside providing essential support to a family member or friend who couldn’t manage without them. From attending medical appointments and managing medications or paperwork to offering emotional reassurance after a long day at work, the demands can be constant and exhausting. Without the right understanding and flexibility from employers, carers often experience stress, financial pressure and burnout. Many leave their jobs because it is too much.
It is important to make an informed decision if you are in this position. There are steps you can take and being aware of your rights is crucial. You can speak to our Benefits Adviser or our Advice Worker or access counselling to help you work out a considered plan.
City of York Council have signed up to Carers UK’s Employers for Carers (EfC) which provides lots of information and advice for employers and working carers including a ‘Carers Guide’.
Register by clicking here and using York’s free access code #EFC6282. Tip: You must include an ‘Organisation name’ to complete the form, enter ‘None’ to continue.
This is free to organisations with fewer than 250 employees and to carers in York.
The resource has everything you need including:
- Information on your rights at work
- How to request flexible working
