Attendance Allowance
Attendance Allowance (AA) is a disability benefit you can claim if you become disabled after state pension age.
If you become disabled before reaching the state pension age, you should claim PIP instead.
AA is paid at a lower rate and a higher rate. The lower rate is paid if you have care needs during the day or night. The higher rate is paid if you have care needs during the day and night.
There is no mobility component to AA.
AA is not means- tested; your income or capital does not affect entitlement.
AA is disregarded as income benefits such as Pension Credit. It may entitle you to extra amounts of Pension Credits if you live alone and nobody receives Carers Allowance for looking after you.
You can get AA if you require help with your bodily functions or you require continual supervision in order to avoid substantial danger to yourself or others.
You do not have to show you receive physical assistance; you must show that you reasonably require it.
An award of AA allows a carer to claim Carers Allowance.
