If you help care for a family member or friend who is living with a mental health condition, it can feel difficult to get the answers and support you might need. We can help.

On this page, you’ll find information about activities and groups, useful links, how to support someone during a mental health crisis, understanding confidentiality, and your rights as a carer through the Carers Charter.

York Mental Health Hubs

In-person support for you and the person you care for is available at the mental health and wellbeing Hubs at Clarence Street and Acomb Garth, where our Carer Peer Support Workers can chat with you about the support we can offer to you.

As well as one-to-one support and advice from an experienced carer, we also offer two groups for family members and anyone supporting someone close who has a mental health condition. These groups are friendly and supportive and are led by our Carer Support Workers.  If you’re not sure if a group is right for you, please get in touch and one of our team can give you an idea of what we do.

Carers Trust – mental health

The local mental health service provider Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust (TEWV) have principles on confidentiality for staff when working with carers detailed here.

This can be a tricky area for carers, so please do get in touch if you would like help with this.

Even if the person you care for does not give consent for information to be shared with you, this does not mean that services should not give you time, hear how things are from your perspective and give you general information and guidance.

Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust (TEWV) have produced a carers charter which is developed for all who support someone being cared for by the Trust.
