Musication: a course for all who love music

Based at the Centre@Burnholme in Bad Bargain Lane, York, Tang Hall Smart Community Interest Company delivers clubs, classes and activities to the local community and to those experiencing disadvantage from the wider York area.

Musication is our name for ‘recovery and progress through music’.  We run an in-house Musication record label, a regular fully-funded part-time course, and bespoke one-to-one sessions for graduates of the course – all focused on enabling musicians who have struggled with disadvantage (homelessness, mental health problems, addiction,  etc) to realise their potential.

The Musication course is a fully-funded part time music course for adults who face barriers/disadvantages to their music-making.  Running on Friday afternoons, 1.30-4.30pm, the course offers a welcoming and supportive environment in which to join in fun music-making activities.  The course is appropriate for musicians/vocalists of all levels, from beginners to expert. We offer coaching in lyrics and basic song composition, guitar/keys at beginner to intermediate level, and plenty of support and encouragement. For ‘experts’ we offer the chance to collaborate with others, in a friendly and well-resourced setting, as well as help in ‘getting going’.

Priority is given to people who have been/are homeless, or experiencing mental health difficulties, and/or are in recovery, but we accept anyone who has been experiencing low mood, and who feels the course may benefit them.

Our sessions are attended by two staff who can support well-being by offering a weekly ‘offload’ session – this is not a formal counselling session but a chance to be listened to in a respectful and supportive manner.

We prefer that participants sign up for a 12 week block of sessions, so they can reap full benefit from the programme, but it might be possible to register at other times too if there are available places. We are running 2 taster days where people can come along informally to meet staff and look at the rooms on Friday 19th and 26th January. The first session of the next 12 week course starts on the 2nd February, 2018 and finishes April.

The course is free to participants as it is fully-funded by Igen.
