Beware scam calls
Beware of bogus HMRC Calls
There is currently a telephone scam where a recorded message is left, allegedly from HMRC, stating that HMRC are investigating the individual for tax fraud and are bringing a lawsuit against them. The recipient is asked to call back and press “1” to speak to the officer dealing with the case. This scam is becoming widely reported and seems to be targeting older people. Please do not reply to the message.
York Carers Centre was contacted by a carer who did reply to the message and was left feeling very shaken and distressed. The carer was informed that over £1000, in unpaid tax, was due and that the money had to be paid at once, or a warrant for her arrest would be issued. When the carer questioned why she had not received any correspondence from HMRC the scammer became very threatening and aggressive and told her if she did not pay up the police would be on their way to arrest her. Fortunately in this case the carer did not give payment details and put the phone down. In this instance, the callers number was 07441 393001 but the scammers use many different numbers.
If you receive a suspicious cold call, you should report it on the Action Fraud website, or you can call Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 between 8am and 8pm, Monday to Friday (Please note this number will be charged at your normal network rate).
