Young Carers

Who are young carers?

We work with young people aged 8 to 18 years who are helping to look after someone at home. You might be helping look after a brother or sister, parent or grandparent with an illness, disability, mental health problem or a problem with alcohol/ drugs.

Did you know?

  • In York there are around 400 young carers (identified in 2001 census) but some studies show there could be up to 3 in 20 pupils who care for a relative.
  • The census showed 175,000 young carers in the UK – there are likely to be many more than this as often people don’t think of themselves as carers.

Get in touch

If you are one of these young carers, please get in touch! If you are working with young carers, or a parent and want to know more, please get in toucn with York Carers Centre.
