Young Carers
Who are young carers?
We work with young people aged 8 to 18 years who are helping to look after someone at home. You might be helping look after a brother or sister, parent or grandparent with an illness, disability, mental health problem or a problem with alcohol/ drugs.
Did you know?
- In York there are around 400 young carers (identified in 2001 census) but some studies show there could be up to 3 in 20 pupils who care for a relative.
- The census showed 175,000 young carers in the UK – there are likely to be many more than this as often people don’t think of themselves as carers.
