The York and Selby Carers Centre was established in 1996 by the York Health Trust, City of York Council (CYC) and North Yorkshire County Council (NYCC) in order to identify and support unpaid Carers in the area. The service, originally based in an office at Monkgate before relocating to a larger office at Clementhorpe Health Centre, has established a strong reputation over the years and has been involved in many innovative projects that worked to change the face of caring in the area.
When the Manager of the Carers Centre left in 2007 North Yorkshire and York Primary Care Trust (NYYPCT) and the two councils CYC and NYCC decided to review local carer services. The review identified the needs and wants of local carers and it was clear that carers wanted an independent organisation and the decision was made that the centre becomes a charitable organisation. At this time NYCC decided that the Selby service would be delivered independently of the York service.
During Carers Week 2008 the Centre moved premises to the Priory Street Centre, a well known base for voluntary and community organizations and is now registered as a company limited by guarantee and will be a registered charity by March 2009. The core work of the Carers Centre is funded by the CYC and NYYPCT
A Vision for the future.
It is hoped that the Centre will be the lead agency for carers information, advice and support for both carers and professionals in the City of York and will develop new and existing services over the next 3 years. We want York Carers Centre to be accessible to carers of all ages and will continue to obtain funding to pilot new services in order to ensure the sustainable future of a Carers Centre that meets the varied needs of carers.
